Coimbatore: “Have you had lunch? You can join us,” Chant Yipin from China hesitantly invites this reporter to lunch with his group at a Chinese restaurant here. He is hesitant not because he does not want to share the lunch, but because his fluency in English is limited.
He is part of the 12-member team from Huaihua University, China, that has come to acquire a degree in English from Bharathiar University.
Most of his team mates cannot understand, speak or write in English. They have taken the step to cross borders to qualify themselves in the international language.
The university staff had taken them to one of the Chinese restaurants in the city to give them a comfortable initiation. To say that they were happy to eat with noodle sticks would be an understatement.
As an outcome of the memorandum of agreement signed between the universities recently, this first batch of Chinese students has reached Coimbatore on Wednesday to start the course in January.
A team headed by Xia li fa, Chancellor and President, Huaihua University, visited Bharathiar University in November to check the infrastructure.
The university will, as a special case, offer degree courses in English to the Chinese students. “Of the 12, three will pursue post-graduate degree, while the rest will be enrolled for the undergraduate program. The PG students will join the mainstream students. The UG students will attend separate classes.
They will have to start from the basics,” said Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam.
