The choice based credit system (CBCS) will become fully effective from the next academic year i.e. 2009-10, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said here on Saturday.
Though the system was introduced all over the State from the current academic year, there were practical problems in its implementation, which had been brought to the government's notice by vice-chancellors of various universities.
Following this, the Minister convened a meeting of vice-chancellors here. Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Mr. Ponmudy said the problems would be resolved, and the system fully effective from the next academic year.
The had been effectively implemented in Bharathidasan and Bharathiar Universities. Under the CBCS, there would be uniform syllabus for core subjects in all universities. This would enable students to migrate from one university to another in the State.
The universities would have the option to have their own syllabus for elective subjects. for the benefit of students, cluster of colleges would be formed in each district so that students could take advantage of the choice of electives provided at a neighbouring college.
At present, pure science or arts subjects were not of students' choice as job opportunities were limited.
