On unique aspect of management education is that the institution from which you qualify is significant in deciding your professional prospects. Thus the need for choosing the right business school for pursuing your management studies. But how do you know which are the best schools?

There are some practical methods we can follow in identifying the school that matches our need. Some of our popular journals often publish the ranking of business schools in the country. They give overall ranking, as well as ranking based on certain aspects such as placement history, faculty, infrastructure, and fees. We should not be blindly carried away by any one ranking. But if we peruse a few rankings by different agencies, we would be able to get a fair picture. Another method is to watch the placement record of different business schools. Most of the good schools publish their placement records on their web sites. The type of organizations that select students and the salaries offered to them give us some Indication of the reputation and quality of the school. It is a wise idea to gather information from the employers` choice of the institutions for campus selection.

It is very easy to state that you should enter only the top business schools. We should remember that there would be tough competition in the selection of candidates for admission to such schools. Keeping in mind this reality, candidates desirous of entry to quality schools should organize long range planning and appropriate preparation to face the entry tests including written examination, group discussion and personal interview. This aspect will be discussed later. We shall now list some of the top business schools in India; the list does not attempt to give them in any specific order of ranking. Some of the schools have facility for specialization in the usual disciplines of human resource, marketing, finance, operations, and systems. However, many schools depend on common entrance tests held at the national level by reliable agencies for preliminary selection. Candidates so selected would be subjected to further tests such as participation in a group discussion and personal interview by individual institutions.

Entrance Tests

The most popular entrance tests for admission to Indian business schools are

CAT – Common Admission Test, conducted by the IIMs
XAT – Xavier Admission Test, conducted by XLRI (Xavier Labour Relations Institute), Jamshedpur.
MAT – Management Aptitude Test conducted by All India Management Association, New Delhi.
ATMA – AIMS Test for Management Admissions (AIMS – Association of Indian Management Schools)
JMET – for the selection of candidates to management programs in IITs & the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude) Test – Common test for the admission to Symbiosis postgraduate institutes.

Some of the schools also accept the score in the global level test GMAT- Graduate management Admission Test. We would look at the details of CAT in some depth, and give brief indications of the features of the other tests.
