‘City is known for its technical resources and entrepreneurship’
Coimbatore: Owing to the presence of a large number of engineering colleges, Coimbatore is likely to become a major destination for Information Technology and IT Enabled Services, next to Chennai in the State, said A. Sakthivel, former president of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore.
IT Park
Speaking at the annual general meeting of the association here recently, he said that the chamber had sought early commencement of works for the IT park here.
The first phase of the runway expansion work at the airport was over and it was “poised for operation of 18 flights throughout day and night.”
Airlines
The Chamber had appealed to foreign airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Malaysian Airlines, Lufthansa, Silk Air and Translanka for operation of flights from here to the respective destinations.
The city, known for is entrepreneurship and technical manpower, however “lags behind in infrastructure facilities.”
Infrastructure
The chamber had repeatedly represented to the State and Central Governments for better infrastructure in the city in different fields such as railways, highways and communication.
It has also submitted its suggestions on some of the important projects that could be included under the revised master plan.
Welcomes moves
The chamber welcomed the moves of the Government to introduce Value Added Tax from January 1, widen the railway over bridge near Hope College here and introduce the Coimbatore – Kumbakonam “Jan Shatabdi Express”.
The Chamber has made appeals to the railways to extend this train as far as Mayiladuthurai.
“We are urging the Railways for introduction of direct trains between Coimbatore and Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam, he said.
