Communication labs must for Engineering Colleges

Chennai: Establishment of communication laboratories has been made mandatory for all engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu.

Disclosing this to journalists here on Sunday, Anna University Vice Chancellor D Viswanathan said “all students have to appear for two papers on communication skills and communication advanced skills for graduation from an engineering colleges.” Institutions must set up communication labs for the purpose, he said.

A paper on communication skills has already been introduced in the sixth semester of third year BE students this month. From the next academic year, the paper would be introduced in fifth semester itself.

“A module totaling 600 hours has already been prepared on key aspects of communication and soft skills,” he said.

The labs, besides taking key aspects of communication like pronunciation, presentation and body language, will also be hubs for school students to strengthen their communication skills.

The school Adoption scheme that is being taken up by engineering colleges will encourage schools to use the lab facility.” This will create an opportunity for rural students to develop their soft skills and help improve the teaching quality at the school level,” Viswanathan explained.

The University has signed an MoU with Cognizant Technology Solutions for training engineering students in soft skills.

Noting that only 60 colleges have joined the EDUSAT network so far, he urged other colleges to use the facility to bring about a sea change in the quality of technical education, especially in the IT branches.

Earlier, he distributed appointment orders to 579 students from to engineering colleges who were picked up by various companies under the Tamil Nadu State Placement Programme. Wipro, CTS, TCS, Infosys and Caritor were among the recruiters.

According to P Mannar Jawahar Director, Centre for University – Industry Collaboration (CUIC), around 19,200 students from 222 colleges attended the placement drive. Around 3,300 of them have been selected so far.

The University is also planning to hold talks with CII to discuss the feasibility of taking awareness drive on core engineering subjects to school students.

“There is a real need to promote core engineering branches as there is a huge vacancy of 10,000 posts in civil engineers. These drives will help students understand the scope available in the future,” he said. The University is also planning to talk to the Tamil Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
