Madurai: The Gandhi Memorial Museum here would launch a programme on Gandhian thoughts for Standard VII to XII students in selected schools in southern Tamil Nadu.

The aim of the programme was to provide a comprehensive picture on Gahdhian ideas to students from VII to XII, said K Lakshmi Kanthan Bharathi, Secretary, Gandhi Museum.

The existing books on Gandhian Philosophy was not suitable for school students cannot understand a Salt Satyagraha Movement. Either it was beyond their comprehension or not entertaining,” he pointed out.

In order to overcome barrier, the museum was planning to design standards. The Standard VII students would be given exposure only to events like Gandhi’s letter to his parents highlighting his honesty (He requested his parents to forgive him for eating non-vegetarian food).

“The museum will be organizing a seminar for Gandhian werites, who will frame the syllabus in June,” he said adding that initially around 15 schools in Madurai would be selected for the programme, scheduled to begin on August 15.

Schools in Dindugul and Tirunelveli have shown interest in the programme.

Interested school Teachers from each standard would be selected and trained by the museum in Gandhian ideas. They, in turn would select students and impart them with a Gandhian Principles during their leisure hours, he added.

Interestingly, the students would also asked to wear khadi dress to school for a day, which according to Bharathi, would make them realize the message of Gandhiji asking the countrymen to wear Khadi and usher in employment in rural India.

“It is not just to make them understand Gandhian theory, but also to apply it while they encounter difficult situations in real life,” he said.

Later the studies would be exposed to Gandhian ideas on ‘Purna Swaraj’, village republic, eradication of untouchability, corruption-free government, preservation of environment, right to protest and his role in nation-building process.
