Fitness is the new mantra in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University

‘Objective is to keep mental and physical tension at bay’

Coimbatore: After introducing e-learning and other students friendly changes to make learning a pleasure on the campus Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has come up with a recent addition to this list – a state-of-the-art fitness centre on its premises.

Fitness Centre:

The brand new fitness cater to the students and faculty of the university but is also open to the public. Equipped with the latest gadgets, the centre also has qualified instructors to extend personal attention to the user depending on their age and health.

In addition, a physiotherapist, a dietician and trainers – both male and female, will be available for an overall revamping of the physical and mental-well being of the users.

Social Motive:

Vice-Chancellor C. Ramasami inaugurated the centre, an initiative of the team under the guidance of K.Vanangamudi, Dean (Agriculture). “This has been designed with the objective of keeping mental and physical tension and strain at bay. Our students work from 7 a.m. This will help them a distress. Most of the gyms are there for commercial purposes. This is started with a social motive”, says the Vice-Chancellor.

To be open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., it promises to relieve its users of not only stress but also make them fitness freaks.

“There is a multi-gym with 16 types of characteristics. In addition to the standard treadmill, stationary cycle and other equipment, there is also unique cardiac equipment. We have planned and brought the best equipment after scouring the city’s gyms”, says Dr. Vanangamudi.

Sophisticated machinery to tone up muscles like biceps, triceps, back and hip muscles, spinal extension muscles and thigh muscles, also find a place here. Those who work out on these and follow a strict will be ensured of strong of joints, lower cholesterol levels, reduced levels of stress and ageing.

To avoid overcrowding the fitness centre authorities have chalked out staggered timings for the students, faculty and the public. “Housewives will get to benefit the maximum with their stretched out timings between 10.30 am and 3.pm. Students and faculty will have their dedicated time slot between 4.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m., while the evening is open to the general public”, says Dr. Vanangamudi

With responsible monthly rates, the centre that has been set up with equipment costing Rs.10 lakh, has already become a great hit, especially with the public.

“Our students have examinations right now. So they are not able to spend much time right now. But we have a good response from the public.

Once the examinations are over, our students will use the facility to stress out”, he adds.

The university has also lined up summer coaching class in the morning hours for those interested to cricket, athletics and basketball. Swimming classes too will be held with separate timings in the afternoon for the women folk

New Pool:

The new pool renovated along with a water purifier at a cost of Rs.12 lakh has been open to the public and children. Separate instructors are available to train kids at the 18-day camps organized by the University.
