Getting a feel of business school life in India

Maiden visit by students from Lahore University

Every bit of Delhi right from its wide roads to the sense of humour of the people here – reminds them of Lahore. But it is not just the flavour of Chandni Chowk`s mouth-watering “dahi ballahs” but a whole lot of other things that these seven Pakistani students will remember Delhi for.

The delegation of seven students from the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) – most of them on their first visit – was here this past week to get a feel of B-school life in India. Hosted by Delhi University’s Faculty of Management Studies (FMS)

Delegation during its stay here had an interactive session with the Dean and other professors. They also attended a few classes with FMS students and discovered that the teaching methods here were quite different from those back home.

“In Lahore, our teachers adopt a case – based method of study. There is a lot of stress on case studies, especially the Harvard ones, and their application in the industry. Here the focus is on literature and theory. There is greater participation by the teachers” said Umar Farrukh, a member of the delegation. His classmate Ayaz Karim pointed out that while case-based approach and strict discipline were the strengths of their Institute, they needed to learn a few things from India’s B-schools in general and FMS in particular.

“Indian industry is very dynamic. There is a lot of interaction between management students and industry leaders. This is one area that LUMS needs to work on. Besides, the students here are involved in a lot of co-curricular activities and run various finance and marketing clubs, which we in Lahore started doing only recently”, he said.
