Goa to develop Educational Estate

Panaji: Goa Education Development Corporation Ltd. (GEDCL), a State-owned corporation working for promoting higher education in the State, is in the process of developing an educational estate at Verna in South Goa.

The State Government is in the process of acquiring land of around 13-lakh sq.m for the proposed education estate, GEDCL chairman M.K.Shaikh told The Hindu on Monday.

The Plan is to develop the entire infrastructure, including common facilities, at the estate and then attract reputed national and international higher educational institutions to set up shop.

Mr.Shaikh is planning to put up to the Government the entire proposal for infrastructure development to seek Government funds in the coming State Budget.

Management software

GEDCL is currently working on another proposal to supply uniform management software to all the State-funded educational institutions – secondary schools, higher secondary schools and colleges- so that there is parity in their administrative affairs and database. The Government will have at its fingertips the data about students’ enrolment and other aspects needed from time to time for policy decisions, said Mr.Shaikh. He regretted that at present many government schemes, including supply of books and other facilities for students, suffered on account of lack of availability of timely, authentic and reliable data from schools. The corporation had sought Rs.1 crore for the project and the same would implemented through private suppliers of software, he said.
