Government Puts Income Cap For SC / ST Scholarship
New Delhi: Scheduled-Caste students will not be entitled for scholarship in "top class education" if the total income of ftheir parents is more than Rs 2 lakh per year, the government has ordered.
"The scholarship meant for 'top class edu-btion' will be given only to those SC students whose parents total earnings do not pceed Rs 2 lakh per annum," the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has said.
While presenting the Budget
2005-06, Finance Minister P Chidambaram had unced as part of measures to empower SC/STs that government had shortlisted 127 isntutioin of excellence that would provide education to meritorious students belonging to the community.
The 127 institutes shortlisted by the government for quality education for SC/STs included 52 Engineering Colleges / IITs, 21 Management, five Law Institutes, 13 Medicine / Dentistry and 26 specialised streams spread across the country.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had a relook at critical gaps in quality education and drafted a more liberal scholarship scheme in consonance with the Budget speech.
"It was considered apt to provide the new window to cover the funding for quality education to SC students up to degree/post-graduate level without any burden on the pupils or their family/' ministry sources said.
The scheme will operate in all institutions notified by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
However, they said the three on-going scholarships for SC/ST students under the Central plan - pre-matric, post-matric and merit based - will continue.
