The Union Cabinet on Friday cleared a Human Resource Development Ministry proposal to introduce a “jumbo legislation” to set up 12 new central universities and take over four existing State Universities.
The move is aimed at ensuring that there is a central university in every State of the country. The 12 new central universities will come up in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Bihar, Orissa and Jharkhand.
The four existing State universities that will be taken over by the Centre and upgraded into central universities are Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Srinagar, in Uttarakhand, Dr. Harisingh Gour University, Sagar, in Madhya Pradesh, Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur, in Chattisgarh, and Goa University, Goa.
During the XI Plan, the budgetary allocation has been fixed a Rs.3,280 crore. of this, Rs. 2,700 crore will be for setting up the new central universities.
And the remaining Rs. 580 crore will be pumped into the four existing State universities to help them with the upgrade.
