New Delhi: Headaches have now become a common ailment among school children with stress and sleep deprivation playing a major role, reveals a new research.
The study, conducted among 2,563 children, shows that girls complain more of headache as compared to boys and the frequency increases as they reach senior classes.
"It is a matter of concern for us. Earlier, this was a phenomenon seen in Western countries. But now, it has become common in India also," Dr M.S. Bhatia, head- of department of psychiatry at G.T.B Hospital, said,
"Children as young as 11 years are now complaining about headache," he said. The study proves that children now face more stress, probably due to studies, he said.
"The stress they face leads to headache, which sometimes aggravates so much that they are not able to focus on their studies. Some even told us that they are not able to work or even play," Dr Bhatia said.
The “psychiatrist thought of conducting the study following several complaints from children.”In our OPD, we were surprised to get many complaints from children about recurrent headaches, which they said hindered their performance in school," he said.
"A significantly higher percentage of children had a family history of headaches too. Occurrence of headache is genetic. Sleep deficiency also plays a major part/' Bhatia said.
"About 11 percent of those surveyed said they got headache due to increased tension due to studies. Girls complained more of headache than boys," said Dr Ravi Gupta, a senior resident, who assisted in the study.
The study was conducted among children in the age group of 12-19 years
