Indira Gandhi National Open University to Start Course in Translation

Coimbatore: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will start a ‘school of Translation Studies and Training’ shortly.

The School will offer courses in Indian Asian and European languages,” said its vice-chancellor V N Rajesekharan Pillai at a press conference here today.

He was here to address the fourth convocation of Jamsetji Tata National Virtual Academy for rural Prosperity Fellows at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) on Saturday. “IT is estimated that in India, there is two lakh job opportunities for translators, whereas the world over there is about 50 lakh job opportunities,” the V-C said.

Translation would be a big industry with a lot of job potentials, especially in the field of trade and commerce in India, Pillai observed. IGNOU would also set up a ‘school of Foreign Languages’, which would on Chinese, Japanese, German, French and Arabic.

Pillai also ‘noted that all the courses in IGNOU would be offered online and it was also creating necessary internet infrastructure in its regional study centres.

In a significant development, IGNOU would offer a certified training programme for anganwadi workers to enhance women’s capabilities, which in tum increase their wages as well.

“There are also plans to start Villages Education Centres and Special Study Centres for the uplift of poor based on the Moily and Sachar committee Reports.” Pillai said.
