IGNOU ‘ready to offer computer training to local body chiefs’
Varsity has started a placement cell
Vellore: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is ready to cooperate with Government or non-governmental organizations in offering computer literacy programmes to the newly elected local body chiefs, according to K. Panneerselvam, Regional Director, IGNOU, Regional Center, Chennai.
Speaking at the IGNOUTNF (Tamil Nadu Foundation) Festival-2006 organized jointly by the IGNOU-TNF Programme Study Center and the Parent Teacher Association of the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Katpadi on Sunday, Mr. Panneerselvam was replying to a request from M. Anbalagan, Coordinator, IGNOU Study Center, Voorhees College to conduct such programmes for municipal chairpersons and local body chiefs and councilors to enable the local bodies to adopt e-governance in their daily administration.
Plea for FM Station
The Regional Director said he would convey to the authorities the request from IGNOU Students for establishment of an FM radio station in Vellore.
He said IGNOU had recently started a placement cell to enable its graduates get employment. The university was in the process of creating a database of its B.C.A. and M.C.A. graduates.

The Union Ministry of Rural Development and IGNOU are engaged in framing the syllabus for a new course in rural development to be offered by IGNOU, he said.
Soft skills
P. Chandrasekaran, programme in-charge of IGNOUTNF study center, Chennai said there was a mismatch between the requirements of the employers and the students’ qualifications.
He called upon the students to develop soft skills, especially communication skills.
Government Recognition
R. Purushothaman, Principal, Government College of Education, Vellore and coordinator of the IGNOU Study Center said the B.Ed; programme offered by IGNOU was recognized by the Tamil Nadu Government as equivalent to the B.Ed., programme offered in the government colleges of education.
P. Anandan, secretary, building committee, Government Girls HSS, Katpadi requested IGNOU to start B. Com, and M.Com courses in the Katpadi center.
A. Muniyandi, Superintendent, Central Prison said more than 150 prisoners had obtained degrees through the IGNOU center.
