Indian Institute of Management - Students with Work Experience

With global firms preferring management graduates with prior work experience, the Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) have fine-tuned their admission strategy by increasing the proportion of such candidates in admissions.

A common trend noticed at IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta is that the Institutions seem to be seeking students with prior work experience. On an average, IIM has admitted more than 60 percent PG programme students with at least one-year work experience.

The IIMs appear to have paid attention to this aspect as their lateral placements become a major attraction for global firms.

IIM-B Administrative Officer, Placement Cell, G K Nagaraj told Express that the institute was planning to admit more than 75 percent students with work experience as there was demand for students with a good job profile. “Currently, 55 percent students in the 2007 batch are with work experience.

In the 2008 batch, more than 65 percent of the students have come after working for a maximum of two years and a minimum of one year.

Over the years, we have noticed that global firms prefer students with a professional work background”, he added.

The placement cell at Bangalore is persuading companies to participate in lateral placements as the jobs offered to these students are middle management positions.

According to officials in the placement cell, these students fair better during placements and best fit the work and post criteria of the global firm.
