Chennai: The Chennai Corporation, which has taken in introducing community colleges in India, will soon introduce IT industry-friendly courses in those institutions from the coming academic year.
According to official services, four-month courses in data conversion / entry, customer sales / caller executive and hospital management would be introduced in the community college at Triplicane from August on an experimental basis, to cater to the needs of the IT industry.
The civic body has called for tenders to identify enterprises for teaching with experience in the field and having tie-ups with corporates to adopt students.
“Five persons have come up with their proposals. All of them have experience and we will sort out everything in a month,” a senior official told Express.
A decision to this effect was taken after a high –level team called on representatives of the CII and NASSCOM in February to find out the genuine needs of the industry.
“This is because we want to prove social security to our students, who are under-privileged and first generation learners in their community,” the official added. But the idea to introduce these courses was to shelve the ongoing ones, which did not have many takers in three colleges, sources pointed out.
For instance, expert nursing Assistant, which had received 34 students this year, computer software got only 11, hardware -4, two / four wheeler mechanism -1, and office management -2. There are no takers for screen printing.
On the other hand, the Rotary Club of Madras East, Club of Madras East, which holds responsibility in imparting software courses for students of the Alwarpet community college, has done a great job with more than 80 students completing the course in the last two years.
The agency is also planning to include 60 students in the current academic sources said. Another interesting thing is that bakery and confectionary management has received good response over the years.
The civic body, along with the Rotary Club of Madras East and Hot Breads, has so far given life to more than 92 students during the last two years and 75 of them are employed in various hotels across the country.
Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin introduced these community colleges in 1999 during his stint and Mayor of Chennai Corporation. The vision of the college is to include the academically, economically an socially-disadvantaged groups and give the best to the least.
“These colleges are primarily job-oriented, work related and skill based institutions. They have been promoted as an educational alternative for Class 10 and Plus Two Passed poor students of Corporation high and higher secondary schools and wards of civic staff,” official said.
Based on a resolution adopted in 2003, even students from government aided schools are admitted in these colleges. Teachers from Corporation Schools take theory classes. Besides, teachers have been employed on a contact basis to impart training in computer software and hardware.
