Chennai: The State Government is committed to improving the quality of school education and has made more funds available this year, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan said on Wednesday.

A sum of Rs 7,056 crore was allotted for school education in 2007-08, as against Rs 5, 438 crore during 2006-07, he said giving away the Dr. Radhakrishnan Awards during the Teachers Day celebrations, organised by the School Education Department.

The Government had implemented a slew of measures for the benefit of teachers, such as facilitating the switchover from consolidated pay to timescale pay for 46,605 teachers.

A total of 10,055 posts had been filled under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan scheme. The State was aiming at minimising the number of school dropouts and the recent order to make the teaching of Tamil compulsory in all schools was a step in this direction.

Activity-based learning

The School Education Department had pioneered the inception of activity-based learning in all districts in the State to make learning a meaningful process, School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said. Over 24,000 teachers had been recruited against the existing vacancies, he added. A total of 353 teachers, including those from matriculation and Anglo-Indian schools and teacher training institutions, were given the Dr. Radhakrishnan Awards. School Education Secretary M. Kutralingam; Sarva Siksha Abhiyan Project Director M.P. Vijayakumar; Chennai Collector R. Jaya; School Education Director R. Kannan; Director of Matriculation Schools D. Jagannathan, and Director of Elementary Education J. Uma Maheswari, participated.
