Chennai: The State Government is committed to improving the quality of school education and has made more funds available this year, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan said on Wednesday.
A sum of Rs 7,056 crore was allotted for school education in 2007-08, as against Rs 5, 438 crore during 2006-07, he said giving away the Dr. Radhakrishnan Awards during the Teachers Day celebrations, organised by the School Education Department.
The Government had implemented a slew of measures for the benefit of teachers, such as facilitating the switchover from consolidated pay to timescale pay for 46,605 teachers.
A total of 10,055 posts had been filled under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan scheme. The State was aiming at minimising the number of school dropouts and the recent order to make the teaching of Tamil compulsory in all schools was a step in this direction.
