Chennai: Officials of the Income Tax (IT) Department seized receipts showing the collection of capitation fee to the tune of Rs 15 crore from the medical and engineering institutions of three city-based educational groups, including the Madras Medical Mission.
According to highly-placed sources in the IT department, the raids were conducted simultaneously on medical and engineering institutions at Chennai, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The details about the raids would be made available on Tuesday since the operation would continue till midnight.
"We cracked down on these institutions as per the intelligence we had gathered. We have clear evidence of the high capitation fee collected by these institutions, which always went unaccounted. So we decided to crack the whip and raid them. We have been carrying out the raids since 9 am a senior IT official told Express.
