Industries to Begin Varsity Courses in July

Coimbatore: The Industries which will be awarded the approved institutions status of the Bharathiar University are likely to begin their courrses in mid-July.

Many industries including hospitals have come forward to run the courses.

However, the varsity is keen on restricting the number of such industries offering BU courses to 10 in Coimbatore, said Bharathiar University Vice Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam in a press briefing here on Saturday.

To note, the varsity is planning to take steps to popularize the system throughout the state and in India in a phased manner.

These approved institutions will run Under Graduate (UG), Post Graduate (PG) and Diploma courses. For UG and PG, a maximum 40 and 30 students will be permitted respectively, whereas for Diploma it will be 100.

While BU is the facilitator of these courses, the industries are the service provider.

“This effort will bridge a gap between the industry and academic institutions. Moreover, it solves the issue of killed manpower shortage cried out by the industry,” said Thiruvasagam.

He also added that the industries could come up with their own syllabus and course based on their need and varsity will grant the permission after studying its value.

Thiruvasagam was participating at the University-Industry Collaboration meet held her with the representatives from various hospitals and several other industries.

He said that the monitoring committee would be appointed shortly, which would inspect the approved institutions every six months and submit a report to the BU.

This committee will consist of BU V-C, Registrar, coordinator and four other experts from outside, who will be connected to the branch of study offered by the institutions.

“The varsity, in line with the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the industries, is permitted to cancel any course, if it is disqualified by the industry offering them,” added the V-C.

“We have been producing graduates without employability skills. This barrier will be shattered through this effort making students employable by the industry,” he marked.

The effort is expected to benefit mutually the industry and the varsity
