Information Technology Transformed in Education and Healthcare Sector

Coimbatore: Information Technology can be leveraged to transform education and health care in India, Shanker Annaswamy, Managing Director, IBM India Private Limited, said here on Wednesday.

Receiving the “Personality of the Decade Award” from the KG Foundation, he said technology could make a big impact on the country’s development.

He stressed the importance of value-based leadership.

Tough jobs

Mr. Annaswamy advised the younger generation not to shy away from tough jobs, as they could give them valuable experience. The 21st century called for collaboration and team work, he added.

Tetsuo Kanno, Emeritus Professor of the Fujita Health University, Japan, another recipient of the award, said that fast-growing countries such as India could help poor nations like Africa.

Conference

An international conference on neurosurgery would be held in Japan in November in which more than 4,000 delegates from various parts of the world were expected to participate.

This was an attempt to attract young neurosurgeons from various parts of the world such as Africa, Latin America, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Pakistan and Afghanistan to the evolving world of neurosurgery, he said.

Another recipient of the award, Yoko Kato, Professor of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Fujita Health University, Japan, said India was developing rapidly owing to its IT revolution.

Women should also come to the forefront in neurosurgery.

Sacrifice

They should not sacrifice their careers for the sake of building up a family, she said.

Sudhansu Bhattacharyya, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon, Mumbai, who received the award, said one should have a focussed approach if one wanted to achieve success.

He asked the youth to work for India rather than migrating to other countries in search of monetary benefits and recognition. Dilip Panikar, Professor of the Department of Neurosurgery, AIMS, Kochi, and A. Raja, Professor of the Department of Neurosurgery, Kasthuriba Medical Centre, Manipal, were conferred the “Teacher of the Decade Award.”

The award had been instituted by the foundation to recognise the works of various personalities across the country, said G. Bakthavathsalam, Chairman of the KG Foundation.

Recognition

The aim of the awards was to recognise the efforts of the unsung heroes in the country, he added.
