Karunya University offers MA Program in Enlish
Karunya University is set to kick off its new post-graduate English program in a big way.
The Department of English, which offers English Lab courses to technical and management students in ‘Language Teaching and Testing’, will now offer an M.A. program in English, with special focus on ‘Language Teaching’. Admission for this degree is open till July 31.
According to Vice-Chancellor Paul P. Appasamy, English Language Teaching (ELT) and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) are the two major areas that are sought after for research work.
“But, the time has come for institutions, teachers and students to realise that specialised language teaching programs are vital for technical communications/he said.
“The Department has a state-of-the-art language laboratory which houses a listening laboratory, computer aided language laboratory, group discussion and writing laboratory,” the Vice-Chancellor added.
Anne Mary Fernandez, Registrar, while explaining the salient features of the program said: “It is a unique PG program. Students who successfully complete the program will have global teaching prospects.
It is obvious that comparatively more people are using English as Second Language (ESL) than as first language. More countries are keeping their doors open to recruit English teachers specialised in ELT or TEFL.
J. Sundarsingh, head of the department, said: “The MA. program is more practically oriented and includes six laboratory courses and a field work.
Students who undergo this program will master the skills in teaching English most appropriately and effectively by using literary and linguistic methods with support from technological innovations.”
The Department of English, apart from regular academic curriculum, will offer training to take up BEC, IELTS and TOEFL examinations.
Students can enroll for any of the above examinations in the course of the program. They are also given opportunity to pursue M. Phil., Ph. D. or B. Ed. programs in the same campus.
Interested students, having an undergraduate degree in any discipline, can contact the Head of the Department at firstname.lastname@example.org; or call 9442072867.
