Lucknow University may re-open in early January

Lucknow: Lucknow University, which closed sine die on December 8, is likely to re-open in the first week of January. A senior LU official said on Tuesday that the varsity was planning to hold the “backpaper / improvement examinations” from January 2 next year.

The varsity administration has also decided to start the allotment process of the start the allotment process of the vacated hostels in the last week of January. “If all goes as per our plans, we would be allotting the hostels from January 27. The entire allotment process is expected to be completed in three days or so,” said LU Proctor Dr A.N. Singh. These decisions were taken at a meeting on Tuesday evening.

Earlier in the day, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court directed the Vice Chancellor, R.P. Singh, to file an action plan to restore academic activities in the campus.

Hearing a PIL seeking direction to restore academic activities in the university and purge the institution of students with criminal background, the Bench comprising Justice Pradeep Kant and Justice Ajai Kumar Singh also posted the matter for further hearing to Thursday.

Both the university and state administration also filled Action Taken Reports (ATRs) in the court on Tuesday, stating that its directions for getting the hostels vacated by the December 17 had been implemented

The university has been told to inform the court about the criteria it plans to apply in the allotment of hostel rooms. The court also directed that law and orders should be maintained in the university with the necessary deployment of forces.

On December 15, the Bench had passed strong strictures against the police and the administration for not providing adequate force to the LU Vice Chancellor in his attempt to hold the student union elections as per the Lyngdoh Committee’s recommendations. Both the VC and the Home Secretary had been directed to place their ATRs in the court on Tuesday. The 11-point ATR of the university mentioned the steps taken to vacate all the hostels. Meanwhile, an audit team which had arrived a few weeks back to probe to financial irregularities reported from the university’s work department, examination and admissions. “We will soon be able to ascertain the exact loss the university incurred,” said the VC.
