Chennai: Reviving the human touch in the field medicine, the Academy of Medical Sciences at the Madras Medical Mission (MMM) will introduce a post-graduate course in Medical Sociology, the first of its kind in the country.

M.Sc Medical Sociology course promises to bring in an element of professionalism among the students in connection wit the non-medical areas of healthcare institutions
Recognized by the Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University, the course, with a total of 10 seats, would commence from the first week of October.
The curriculum would include principles of sociology of health and illness, social psychology, mental health, sociology of medicine, social and preventive medicine, health education and social marketing in the first year.
The subjects for the second year would include sociology in medicine, hospital operations and management, medical terminology, medical ethics and laws, social support and counselling.
“There is lot beyond medical care in relation to physical and psychological care. Medical sociology deals with social relations that exist in the field of medicine. It hopes to enhance the quality of interaction between the healthcare providers and the beneficiaries.” Said Dr. Philomena Mariados, dean of the academy.
With the increasing mechanization in the medical field, the human touch was lost; she said and added that the application of sociology in medicine would revive this.
Till now, the course had been offered as a single paper in several institutions while Loyola College offered an MA in Medical sociology, in 2004, MMM had introduced B.Sc.Medical Sociology, under the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. “The students will be given field work in the community and we can also assure them of placements,” she added.
The career prospectus included teaching positions, employment as social scientists in various research organizations and posts like transplant coordinators in healthcare industries.
