Medical Counselling from July 2

Chennai: Counselling for medical and para-medical courses will be held from July 2 to 8, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said here on Tuesday.

Counselling for engineering courses would begin the day after counselling for medical courses ended. It would go on till August 15.

More than 87,000 applications had been sold so far for engineering courses. Mr. Ponmudy claimed this was an indication that more rural students were applying for engineering courses. The Higher Education department expected 1.2 lakh applications to be sold this year. There were 65,000 seats in engineering courses in the government quota and another 35,000 in private engineering colleges. Counselling in private engineering colleges would begin only after the conclusion of counselling for government seats.

Counselling:

Talking to reporters here, Mr. Ponmudy said the Government was of the opinion that counselling should be held in Chennai alone to eliminate inordinate waits that a multi-point counselling system brought with it. This also resulted in greater transparency since all the students were allotted seats at Anna University in front of everyone.

But, if there was considerable opposition to the counselling being held only in Chennai, the Higher Education Department could hold it in other centres too. The Government had reduced the fee for counselling to reduce the burden on students.

"I spoke to the Chief Minister and the Transport Minister on the problem of travel of students from far-flung areas to Chennai. The Chief Minister agreed to reduce by 50 per cent the fare for students and two parents/guardian to travel to Chennai for counselling," he said.

Admission Method:

On the method adopted for admission, he said for medicine and para-medical courses, in the event of a tie, the marks in Biology would be taken into consideration. Whoever had scored more in Biology would get the nod. If there was still a tie, then the marks in Chemistry would be considered. If the tie persisted, the marks obtained by the candidate in the optional subject would be taken into consideration. If the marks were equal in this case too, then the date of birth of the candidate would be the next criterion — the older candidate would get the chance. If this too were the same, then the candidate with the higher random number would be given the seat.

Mr. Ponmudy said the random number method could not be equated with a draw of lots. After the deadline for receipt of filled-in applications ended, a computer-generated number would be given to each application. "This is the random number. We intend publishing this on the website along with the application number so that a student will know ahead of the process of counselling what his random number is."

In the case of engineering, the marks obtained in Mathematics would be considered in the event of a tie. If the tie remained, then the marks in Physics would be taken into consideration. If the marks still remained equal, then the marks in the optional subject would be taken into consideration, followed by the date of birth and random numbers if there was a need.

Asked what the department would do in the event of a student, who had been granted a medical seat, appearing for engineering counselling, Mr. Ponmudy said the student would have to give it in writing that he would surrender his medical seat if he was allotted an engineering seat.

"He or she will not have the option of coming back one week and saying what he or she wants to choose."

On the aptitude test for architecture courses, he said that the Union Human Resource Ministry had approached the Supreme Court. Tamil Nadu would decide over the next few days.
