Medical teachers with 10 years service to be made Readers
Government Order to this effect expected shortly
Salem: The State Government has decided to designate those doctors who has been enlisted as teachers in the medical education service and completed a minimum of 10 years civil services as Reader in tune with the requirement of the Medical Council of India (MCI).
Long pending
“This decision, which has been pending long before the Government, was taken at a recent secretaries’ level meeting in Chennai,” said the president of the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA) K.Prakasam
Impact
Dr. Prakasam said Government Order to this effect was expected shortly.
He said it would have a far-reaching impact on the medical education in the state. “Now this Government can easily fill up the vacant posts of deans on seniority basis. A total of seven posts of dean are remaining unfulfilled till today,” he said.
Clinical services
He said hitherto even after completing 25 years of both teaching and clinical service a doctor would not be in a position to achieve the Reader status.
“Now within 15 years of service, a doctor, who has experiences in both clinical and teaching spheres, can be promoted as Readers,” Dr. Prakasam said.
Future with the cut of year fixed at 1991 for designation, those who have the required experience would be automatically finding their place in the panel for deans.
Advantage
Another advantage was that since the postings would be filed up as per the MCI norms, the intake of the candidates for postgraduate courses in the medical colleges in Tamil Nadu could be significantly enhanced, he said.
“Lack of faculty so far has forced the MCI not to entertain the Government’s request for the enhancement of PG seats so far.
The present category of Readers will be designated as Associate Professors in future. Nearly 500 doctors who are in Government services will be benefited from this,” Dr.Prakasam added
Rank
The TNGDA also noted that the doctors on service were on a par with the rank of Deputy Collectors, the Government should appoint Deputy Directors of Health as chairmen for the Health Society Scheme instead of Block Development Officers.
Leprosy
It also thanked the Government for reviving the posts of Deputy Director (DD) in medicine and leprosy, which has been scrapped during the previous regime.
“Now the Government had appointed DDs for these posts in 11 districts,” he said.
