More Government Schools will Get Language Labs

Coimbatore: Language laboratories have been started in 30 government schools to improve English communication skills of students, Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu said on Tuesday.

Inaugurating the school improvement conference here , he said the English language skills of Government school students were poor. The laboratories would strengthen their written and spoken English. The programme would gradually be extended to all other schools.

The Government had allotted Rs.7,000 crore for school education. In one year, 8,500 vacancies of teachers were filled. The vacancies caused by the retirement of 15,000 teachers this year were being filled, he said.

Mr.Thennarasu stressed the importance of community participation in education. The objective was to bridge the gap between the community and the schools. Such a conference had already been held in Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur and Vilupuram districts, and would be held in the remaining 26 districts. In response to complaints of corruption in the teacher training institutes in the State, he said regular inspections would be carried out and action taken against those who indulged in unethical practices.

Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N.Palanisamy suggested that the shift system be introduced in government schools, especially those in towns like Tirupur. Collector Neeraj Mittal said that in the next six months, all the infrastructure requirements of schools would be met.
