More attention for secondary education in 11th Plan
Two-thirds of funds will be utilized, says official
Tiruchi: The secondary and higher education will receive more attention in 11th Plan, Abhijit Sen., Member, Planning Commission of India, said on Sunday.
Though the extend of allocation has not been finalized, secondary education will receive the same attention as the elementary education did in the 10th Plan. For higher education, the spending will be much higher. “A significant increase is likely,” he told presspersons in an informal chat here.
Against the goal of utilizing 6 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product for education over the years, the actual expenditure amounted to a little more than one-third of the allocation. In the 11th Plan, at least two-thirds of the funds would be utilized, he said.
As for the progress of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, he said it was active only in certain pockets. However, the fear that the amount would be misused was unfounded. The real problem was not leakages but insufficient awareness among the people of the scheme.
If only Rs.9000 crore against the estimate or Rs.20, 000 crore could be spent, did not know that they had to demand work.
Asked about the impact of different political ideologies on plan making, he said that by collating all good aspects, the commission functioned like any other organization.
The current pace of economic growth was sustainable, he said.
