Nation should Invest in its Youth power, says Vice Chancellor

Around 40 lakh Indian scientists are working for various countries

Coimbatore: Indias greatest strength is its excellent human resources. D. Viswanathan, Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, Chancellor of Anna University, said here on Sunday. Delivering the convocation address at Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology, he said that the country should invest its confidence in the youth. The responsibility of developing the nation rested not just with the Government, but also with the youth.

We should follow the example of China, which had made tremendous progress in the last few decades owing to the industriousness its younger population.

Countries such as Australia and Canada were inviting Indian students to take up courses in their universities and work there as their population was dwindling. “We should be able to utilize our human resource for the benefit of our country and the youth should be motivated to work for their own country instead or migrating to others in pursuit of better career prospects,” Mr. Viswanathan said.

Around 40 lakh Indian scientists were working for various countries in the world and there were not even one-lakh scientists in our country, he noted. Engineering graduates should take up higher education and get involved in research activities. They should not stop their education with a graduation. They should constantly educate themselves through online or correspondence courses in software development and take up part time research.

The industries faced a dearth of competent manpower. This year, Infosys rejected a $ 3 billion order because of the lack of qualified manpower, he said. In the next five years, the number of opportunities for BE graduates would be 10 lakh and there would be 15 lakh jobs in the Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) sector. But not every graduate was able to land jobs, because of he lack of proper communication skills.

With an aim to make engineering graduates employable, the University had made classes in English communication skills compulsory for the students of the sixth semester, he said. “It is not enough if the students are strong in technical skills. They should also be able to communicate properly,” he said.

Information, and Technology, biotechnology, and nanotechnology were the most recent path-breaking advancements in technology, which the country should take advantage of. For this, it had to improve the quality of technical education.

Mr. Viswanathan pointed out that there were shortages of technically qualified faculty in centres for higher learning in the country. There was clearly a needed for more number of engineers and faculty. Also, the technical institutions were expected to produce graduates who would be capable to be an active participant of the scientific research community of the nation.

He also pointed out that banning of cell phones on the campus had increased the placement rate in the university by 30 per cent. All programmes such as fashion shows had been banned in engineering colleges so that first priority of the students always remained studies.
