New Courses at National Institute of Technology – Karnataka

The National Institute of Technology – Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, will start six new courses in M.Tech, MBA and M.Sc. streams from the academic year 2007-08.

One of the top engineering colleges in the country expansion of its academic programmes. The areas it has chosen include Construction Management, Rock Mechanism and Ground and Information Security. It will conduct a PG course in pure science (Chemistry), The MBA stream will open new vistas for the students.

NIT- K is also one of the major centres for the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Under this programme. NIT-K is able to take up M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes.

According to NIT-K Director Sandeep Sancheti, the institute has updated its teaching and examination scheme from time to time based on need and its own feedback, inputs derived from experts from outside the institute, industries and alumni. Dr.Sancheti says that in the past several new intra-departmental elective course were added to impart knowledge to the students which is the USP of the institute.

Workshops

Curriculum development workshops are organized every academic year to seek inputs on such changes. NITK is one amongst the leading centrally-funded institutions of the World Bank-assisted “Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP)” with a total outlay of around Rs.21 crore. NIT-K was the first institution to receive the entire fund because of its academic excellence and good fund utilization.” As a reward, NIT-K has got an additional grant of Rs.3 crore during the current fiscal.

The thrust of the new programme is on expanding industry linkages, says the chairman of the governing board of NIT-K, Goverdhan Mehta.

The Institution has 210 students enrolled for Doctoral programmes, providing a major base for research activities. The institute offers more than 25 scholarships for research leading to award of Doctoral degree.
