Order on Christian Medical College (CMC) Admission Process

Chennai: A single judge order upholding the admission process adopted by Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, and the preferential allotment of MBBS seats for wards of CMC employees, has been challenged in the Madras High Court.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P.Shah and Justice D.Murugasen ordered notices to the State Government and the CMC management.

In his appeal, P.Arunkumar of Nagercoil said the Supreme Court had held that allotting more than 15 percent of the total marks for interview during admission process in educational institutions was “plainly illegal.” But, in the impugned order delivered on February 13, the single judge had upheld the process, which gave 4 per cent of the total marks to interview alone. This distorted the results of the selection process.

As for the allotment of six seats to the wards of CMC staff members, the appeal said the single judge ought not to have said it would fall within the term “institutional preference.”

Describing it as wholly unsustainable. Mr.Arunkumar said: “Excepting the reservations contemplated in Article 15(4) of the Constitution, there cannot be any reservation made in favour of any category or group of persons. The reservation of six seats in favour of the children of CMC staff members is wholly unconstitutional.”
