Coimbatore: The PSG College of Nursing is planning to-start
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) for Post-Graduate students.
PBL is a novel method which is yet to be implemented in a bigger way in our country. It is an educational format that is centred around the discussion and learning that emanates from a clinically-based problem.
This method, which encourages students to work in groups to carry out research and think independently to solve real-world problems, is growing into an international educational movement.
"We have already implemented this method while teaching in clinical area. We still have to follow the lecture format to cope with the examination pattern said Prof A Jayasudha of PSG College of Nursing.
Marina Thomas of PSG Institute of Medical Science and Research had been to US for six months to learn this method of teaching.
"In India, the curriculum for PBL is not yet designed," Jayasudha said adding that the pilot study is under way and there has been both positive and negative output from them.
The curriculum for PBL is yet to be designed by the MGR University. The second hindrance is the lack of qualified staff.
"To implement this method, we need more teachers. In India, there are very few skilled teachers and it would be difficult for them to handle PBL classes”. she said. Since no college in the country has started using this method of teaching, the final year students of the PSG College have provided a platform by organising a workshop to 'create awareness about this innovative method.
Nearly 140 post-graduate nursing students from eight different colleges in Tamil Nadu participated in the workshop titled Innovative methods of teaching in nursing' held recently.
