Coimbatore: PSG College of Technology has entered into an agreement with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to encourage students to pursue research interests.

Signing the Memorandum of Understanding at the college here on Sunday, S. Padmanabhan, Executive Vice-President, Global Human Resources, Tata Consultancy Services, Mumbai, said the tie up would help create a culture of research and enable students to carry out their research work with financial and technical support from the company.

He lamented the decrease in the number of students opting for pure research compared to the situation a few years ago. He also stressed the importance of fundamental research in increasing productivity. “If we need to break away from the linear model of production, we need people who can come up with better models,” he said.

Research would ultimately lead to the development of new tools and algorithms, which would pave the way for increased productivity, he added. Producing research scholars would help the industry as well as the academic world.

The duration of the programme was four years. The company would give the scholars a stipend of Rs.8,000 during the first year, Rs.10,000 during the second year and Rs.12,000 for the third and the fourth years. About 10 students from all over the country would be selected for the research programme.

The selection would be done by the college. The progress of the research would be jointly monitored by the company and the college. Periodic reviews would also be done by the company.

The programme would also provide the students a platform to present papers in international conferences, Mr. Padmanabhan said. The company would also look at sponsoring students to present papers in conferences held outside the country.

The company had similar collaborations with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, for research programmes on Computational Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur for Electronics and Design and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for manpower development and research in Very Large Scale Integration Design.
