She is a headmistress with a difference, who even cleans classrooms

Edayankattuvalasu Municipal Middle School aims high

Erode: An 82-year-old municipal middle school at Edayankattuvalasu stands out from the rest, thanks to its headmistress.

The headmistress and the members of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) have embarked on a mission of cleaning classrooms everyday.

There is a heavy rush for admission to this school because of its high standards of discipline and education. The school is located in 24th ward of Erode Municipality. The institution, which was started as a Thinnai Pallikoodam' in 1925 with 20 students, has now 840 on its rolls. The school was taken over by Erode Municipality in 1939 and in course of time, upgraded to the level of a middle school in 1987-88.

Parents-Teachers Association president R. Sundarasa my said: "My father, my son and I studied in this school and a number of Government officers and bank officials in various places in the State are former students of this school."

Mr. Sundarasamy said the PTA had obtained more than Rs. 18 lakh from MLA and MP funds for construction of classrooms. The school bought 10 computers with the money given by former MP and Union Minister M. Kannappan from his MP constituency fund.

The school headmistress Ms M. Tamizmani said: "I studied in this school. After graduation I worked in some other schools before I was appointed headmistress here 12 years ago." Ms. Tamizmani said this was the only municipal middle school where computer education was imparted. But she said the school did not have a computer teacher.

Sri Nandha Educational Trust Chairman V. Shanmu-gan had agreed to get a teacher, she said.

PTA representatives said the headmistress opened the school at 8.30 a.m. everyday and she, along with some PTA members cleaned classrooms.

The school would start at 9 a.m. sharp and the headmistress herself stood at the the gate to ensure that the students and the teachers observed punctuality. She is a Best Teacher Award winner. PTA representatives said the school required 24 teachers. At present the school has 22 teachers, all of them women.
