New VC assumes Charge, says Periyar Chair will become functional

Salem: Periyar University here will offer certificate and diploma courses for those who have failed the 10th examinations, its Vice-Chancellor M. Thangaraju said.

Employment

After assuming charge as the university’s new Vice-Chancellor recently, Mr. Thangaraju told reporters that many students in rural areas in Salem region discontinued their studies if they failed in Standard X. These courses would enable them to continue their studies and get employment.

He said that efforts would be made to conduct more faculty development programmes to improve teaching standard in the affiliated colleges.

The university would give priority for enhancing the quality of education in its affiliated colleges.

Study

A study would be conducted about the facilities available in colleges and efforts would be made to improve them, he added.

Mr.Thangaraju said that the university would select one of its study and research departments and initiate efforts to develop it into a Centre of Excellence. It would provide more opportunities to the students in Salem region to take up research and development activities.

The university would give importance for the development of women and educational development of people living in remote and hilly areas.

The university would make the Periyar Chair functional shortly.

Steps would be initiated to fill up the Registrar’s post, which remained vacant for long in the university.

Mr.Thangaraju earlier served as principal of Annai Teresa College of Arts and Science in Kancheepuram district.
