Plus Two Syllabus to get Lighter

Committee examining syllabi of all the other classes.

Chennai: Students of Plus Two can relax a little bit. Having realized that the present syllabus is to heavy, the Government has decided to lighten it well ahead of the March final examinations.

A committee, headed by the State Planning Commission vice-chairman, M.Naganathan, has taken up the syllabus for detailed study. On Friday, School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu met Dr.Naganathan and the syllabus review committee, and held discussions on various issues in which portions to be detected figured.

The meet also discussed the 11th Five Year Plan approach to school education. Mr. Thennarasu said that he was told that the committee would submit its report by next week.

Bid to allay fears

The aim was to make an announcement at an early date so that students did not unduly fear the examinations based on what they had heard from their seniors.

The Education department had received complaints from many parents and students over the “heavy syllabus”. Many had two main areas of concern: one was the common entrance test and the other was the Plus Two examination. One of the main reasons for the dip in pass percentage in the plus two examinations last year was the ‘heavy’ syllabus, he said and added that the committee was set up to specifically to study the issue.

Syllabi of all the other classes were being examined to find out if they were burdensome to students.

The Government was keen on improving the pass percentage and wanted to ensure that students received quality education, Mr.Thennarasu said. The department had taken proactive action to fill existing vacancies, he said and added that of the 2,000 headmaster vacancies in Higher Secondary Schools, only 135 remained now. “It was a tough task to complete the job in the past five months. But we realize that without a headmaster nothing would work in a school,” Mr.Thennarasu told The Hindu.

The department was also looking at vacancies in schools and was working on a plan to provide adequate teachers to all schools. The Teachers Recruitment Board had already conducted examinations and was in the process of selecting teachers.
