Polytechnic Students Designed Wind-Powered Mobile Charger

Puducherry: Students of the Women's Polytechnic College have found a hassle-free solution to recharge mobile phones while on the move. The innovative technology, which uses renewable energy source, has the potential to be of great help to train travellers who do not have a viable option to charge their mobiles during long-distance travel.

The 'Wind-powered mobile charger' replicates the wind turbine principle and has a fan, plastic box, battery back-up, cordless phone battery, motor and charging circuit as components.

A train traveller has to simply keep the equipment on the windowsill of the speeding train to tap the wind energy and charge the mobile phones.

The machine also has the option to save the generated power. Hence, the device also doubles up as a portable mobile phone charger.

The proto-type model was designed by students of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Women's Polytechnic College, at a cost of just Rs 250.

J Ashtalakshmi, M O Sri Devi, M Priya, C Vijayalakshmi, P Senthamizhselvi, S Sharmily Rosa and S Geetha are the seven students who had worked on this project.

The model bagged first prize at a competition organised by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, New Delhi, and Renewable Energy Agency of Pondicherry, to mark Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day-2007 in Puducherry on September 13. J.Ashtalakshmi, a member of the team, explained the mechanism of the wind powered mobile phone charger.
