The legislations to provide 27 percent reservation for OBCs in elite educational institutions, including IITs and IIMs from the next academic year, became law today with the presidential A P J Abudul kalam giving his assent to it.
“The central Educational institutions (reservation in admission) Bill 2006 has received the assent of the president,” an official press note said.
The Act paves the way for implementing reservation form the academic session of 2007. Both houses of parliament passed the bill last month. The provisions of the act will not apply to a central educational institution established in a tribal area, institutions of excellence, research institutions, institutions of national and strategic importance and minority educational institutions.
Human Resource Development Minister Arujun Singh had early said that generate bill on providing quota for OBCs in unaided institutions was ready and would be brought before the parliament in the near future
The law has not excluded the “creamy layer” despite the parliament standing committee for human resource development recommending covered only after giving priority to the “non-creamy” among the backward classes.
