With vacant teacher posts in government schools being filled on the basis of seniority in employment exchanges, the State Government had filled nearly 20, 000 posts in primary schools in the last nine months, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi said here on Wednesday.
Convocation
Delivering the convocation address at the Lady Willingdon Institute of Advanced Study in Education, the Minister said unlike in other departments, vacancies in schools and colleges would affect the future generation. The Government had lifted the ban on recruitment of teachers.
About 2, 000 college teachers were also recruited in the last one year.
Stressing the need for reforming the education system, the Minister said the State Council of Higher Education had already started working on it.
The teachers on their part should update their knowledge and keep pace with the changing situation as they had a greater responsibility of moulding the future generation.
Intake Increased
As there was need for more teachers, the Government planned to increase the intake of M. Ed. in the institute from 25 students to 50.
College principal Chandra Santhakumar said 205 students received the bachelor of education and 25 got the master of education degrees, including six visually-challenged students.
