Chennai: Students from rural Tamil Nadu secured five of the top seven ranks in the MBBS/ BDS merit list released by Health Minister KKSSR Ramachandran on Wednesday. Interestingly, the State topper, P Praveen Kumar of Coimbatore and six others tied with a cut-off mark of 2007 in the merit list, which was prepared based on their scores in the plus two board examination. The Directorate of Medical Education used tiebreakers to award the seven ranks. The random number criteria had to be adopted to break the tie only in two cases.
Curiously, seventh rank holder G K Ashwin Kumar of Pollachi managed to secure a medical seat only after the abolition of the Common Entrance Test His earlier attempts at cracking the CET in 2004 and 2005 proved dismal this year, his 2004 plus two marks have helped him get the seat.
While R Nithiyanandan of Namakkal secured the second rank, M Karthikcyan of Hosur bagged the third place. The fourth, fifth and sixth ranks are held by H Meena of Coimbatore, C Jerin Sekhar of Kanyakumari and S Thah-seen Nilofar of Ramanthapuram. The complete rank list can be viewed at
