Tirupati: That the ancient Indian language Sanskrit, is gaining popularity among the younger generation is vouched by the phenomenal rise in number of Students enrolling at Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth (RSVP), a deemed university located here.

Debunking the theory that interest in Sanskrit it restricted to priestly classes, there are a number of SC / ST and Muslims studying the ancient language in RSVP.

The student strength in RSVP has gone up by 113 percent since 2001, and the number of girls increased more than four fold from 67 in 2001 to 282 in 2007.

Vice-Chancellor of the Sanskrit University, Hare Krishna Satapathy, attributes this to the culture of teaching in vogue here. “It is more akin to the traditional Gurukul system,” he said. The major factor for the rising popularity of the RSVP is the national gained by the A+ accreditation given by the NAAC in 2003. The standard of education coupled with the facilities, has made it a most sought after centre for study in Sanskrit in the country, Satapathy said.

Another factor is that English language and computer Science are taught along with Sanskrit at the degree level. This has helped boost the self confidence of the students as they can compete on a par with degree holders of other universities and improve their employability.

“The success of RSVP can be measured by the fact that we have two sections of 60 students each studying Sahitya,” Head of Department of Sahitya, Srilatha Rani said.

“The interest in Sanskrit, which holds the key to great treasures of knowledge, and the congenial atmosphere at RSVP made me come all the way from Jullelamudi in Guntur District, Said Jharina Bagum who is doing her Ph.D. in Sahithya Department.

The popularity of RSVP can be gauged from the fact that are 1,200 to 1,600 applications from across the country for 100 seats in B.Ed. (Siksha Sastry) course.

The student Strength in RSVP has gone up by 113 percent since 2001, and the number of girls increased more than four fold from 67 in 2007 to 282 in 2007.
