Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan's Active Learning Method

Chennai: The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (‘Education-for-all movement') wing of the State's School Education Department will soon launch the Active Learning Methodology (ALM) for students of classes VI, VII and VIII.

The methodology, developed jointly by the Department and Chennai-based The School (Krishnamurti Foundation India), is aimed at equipping students to read, comprehend and recall information with a good understanding of the fundamental concepts.

The introduction of the methodology follows the implementation of Activity Based Learning (ABL) modules for classes I to IV in about 40,000 government and government-aided Schools across the State this June.

School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said: 'The ABL modules were designed to make the learning process more interesting for primary schoolchildren.

Now, we are targeting middle schoolchildren with the ALM."

The ALM has been tested in about 120 schools across 12 districts in the State last month as part of a pilot project. The promising results prompted the department to extend it to all 10,000 government and aided schools that have classes from VI to VIII. With the State Government insisting that no child be detained till class VIII, the methodology would help improve the quality of students joining class IX, Mr. Thennarasu said
