Novel learning method introduced to improve levels of understanding
Salem: The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has introduced Active Methodology, a new teaching method, for Standards VI to VIII in 10 schools at Ayodhyapattinam block in the district on a trial basis this academic year.
The new method is aimed at ensuring quality in the middle schools and improving the level of understanding of the students.
Concept
Officials with Sarva Shiksha abhiyan said that Active Learning Methodology is primarily based on ‘SQ4R’ concept, which lays importance on aspects such as survey, question, read, recite, review and reflect.
Students would be encouraged to undertake self-learning and peer-group learning methods.
In addition to this, the child would be motivated to use the mind power mapping technique to draw the lesion in pictorial form, officials said.
The method will help children become more creative. While teaching a lesion, the teacher will adopt the role of facilitator.
Each student will be asked to prepare a mind power map of the content based on their understanding.
The teacher will review the maps, identify the areas where students lack understanding and help them learn better, official said.
The methodology was also aimed at enabling teachers to understand students better. This in turn was likely to ensure effectiveness in teaching and learning process.
It was expected that the method would be useful to teach science and social science subjects, official said.
Training
The organization planned to give to the block resource teacher educators about the new teaching method initially.
The teacher educators, in turn, would train teachers in the middle schools.
The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan would contact more sensitization programmes about the method to all the middle school teachers.
