Separate University for Education Colleges

Salem: The Association of University Teachers (AUT) Tamil Nadu has urged the State Government to establish a separate university for education colleges.

A resolution passed in this regard at the AUT General Council meeting held here on sunday said that such a move would help properly regulate and streamline the functioning of education colleges, which were mushrooming in the state.

In another resolution, the association wanted the universities in the state to strictly adhere to the university Act statutes while granting affiliation to new colleges and courses.

Evening Courses

It urged the universities to initiate stringent action against colleges, which run evening courses concurrently or overlapping day courses.

The association also urged the state government to create a separate directorate to govern the self-financing colleges. The Government should amend and update the Tamil Nadu Private Colleges (Regulations) Act 1976, incorporating the suggestions made by the Joint Action Committee (JAC)of college teachers, without any further delay. It should bring in a common university act.

Malpractice

Another resolution demanded that the Periyar University take action against those persons involved in the distance education examination malpractice reported in Haryana recently.

The association appealed to the Government to streamline functioning of joint Directorates of collegiate Education. It expressed dis appointment over the confusion prevailing in the release of UGC pay arrears to aided college teachers.

Arrears

The Teachers retired from 1999-2000 wre yet to receive the arrerars, a resolution pointed out.

It urged the state Government the revised career advancement scheme from January 1996 instead of July 27, 1998.

The AUT also wanted the Union Government and the University Grant Commission (UGC) to take up measures for the revision of pay scales for college and university teachers with effect from January 1, 2006 and grant in terim relief pending revision. it appealed to the Centre to withdraw the new pension scheme.

Retirement Age

The other demands of the association inclued increasing the age of retirement for college teachers as prescribed by UGC and filling up of the posts of registrars / controlle of examinations in Periyar, Thiruvalluvar and Madras Universities.

Earlier, the association felicitated its members who retired from service in 2006-07. Participating in the function , Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam honoured the retired teachers Periyar University Vice Chancellor M. Thangaraju felicitated the retired teachers. Association President P. Jayagandhi presided over the function.

General Secretary of the association U. Sundararajan and treasurer V. Ambalavanan also spoke.
