Seven Engineering Colleges gets Autonomy

Coimbatore: Seven affiliated engineering colleges of Anna University, Coimbatore, were given autonomy on Wednesday.

At an informal function on the premises of the university representatives of the seven colleges received the letters of autonomy from Vice-Chancellor R. Radhakrishnan.

The colleges were: Kumuraguru College of Technology, Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Karpagam College of Engineering (all in Coimbatore) Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam, Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai, KSR College of Engineering, Tiruchengode, and Adhiyamaan Engineering College, Hosur, The status of autonomy would initially be for a period of five years.

“Out of the nine colleges which had applied, we selected seven based on certain criteria. We will be happy to offer autonomy to more colleges if they met the requirements,” the Vice-Chancellor said. There were only four autonomous technical institutions of the Anna University, Madras, prior to the forming of Anna University, Coimbatore. The new seven colleges would add to these. Anna University, Coimbatore, would now have ten autonomous colleges, with the three already existing colleges coming under its purview. It is after a gap of more than 20 years, seven engineering colleges were getting autonomy in the State.

The colleges would be allowed to have a flexible curriculum, complete with their own Board of Studies, Academic Council and examination system. They could form tie-ups with foreign universities and the industry without “getting a nod” from the university.

The status was expected to further improve the excellence of the colleges

The Vice-Chancellor announced the addition of nine new colleges. They were the Chettinadu College of Engineering and Technology, Karur, the RVS College of Technology, Sulur, the Vidyaa Vikkas College of Technology, Namakkal, the Info Institute of Engineering, Coimbatore, the Angel College of Engineering and Technology, Tirupur, Senguthar College for Women, Namakkal, Excel Engineering College, Komarapalayam, the King College of Technology, Namakkal, and the Mahendra Institute of Technology, Namakkal.
