Start Home Science Education in Schools

Home science education should also be started in schools. Thara Chandrika, former professor of Home Science, St. Therasa’s College, Ernakulam, said here recently.

At the valedictory of the Home Science Association at Avinashilingam University, she said that nutrition and health education played a major role in enhancing health expectancy of an individual. Home Science was education for living it fostered the physical, social, cultural and spiritual development of the individual, family, community and the nation, she said.

The subject focused on the ways to lead a healthy life. In the modern age, labour saving equipment reduced physical activity and this often resulted in obesity.

Diseases on the Rise:

Cardio vascular diseases and diabetes mellitus were also on the rise because of this, she said. The consumption of junk foods by the younger generation had also increased the cases of obesity among children and anemia too.

Awareness about this should increase. Simple nutritious snacks such as raw vegetables and fruits could be taken instead of deep-fried fast foods.

Exercising regularly would increase health expectancy of a person.

Those qualified in home science should promote and establish eating outlets providing nutritious foods that could improve health. She also explained that the subject offered innumerable job opportunities.

Sathyavathi Muthu, Dean, Faculty of Home Science of the university, said that home science education was important for human resource development. It improved the status of the women in the family, community and the nation on the whole. Home Science education contributed to the nation’s development.
