Coimbatore: Look beyond textbook knowledge, advised G.J. Samathanam, Advisor, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to students her on Monday. He was delivering the ninth graduation day address at the Karpagam Arts and Science College (Autonomous).
The teachers should make the students understand the relevance of knowledge. Mere textbook knowledge is not enough. The teachers should involve themselves in various projects and take students as their projects assistants. This would help the students to develop their knowledge and become future leaders,” he said.
Concentrate on one particular subject and develop your aptitude in it. You will achieve success in life,” he added.
Citing various examples including the life history of mathematical genius S Ramanujam, he said, “though Ramanujam failed in all exams except mathematics, he was a great success. He got his degree by not writing exams but by producing thesis.”
Samathanam advised the college management to equip their library with books and CDs in eminent Indian leaders. “By reading biographies of great leaders and personalities, one can learn and get inspired by them,” he said.
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) is very valuable now, he said stressing the need for creating an awareness on IPR.
Samathanam also stressed on the importance of basic sciences. “Today, non-medical basic science students are winning nobel prizes, even in medicine stream. What we learn in basic science is very important and it helps in developing our mind and reach greater heights.”
He wanted the students to have good exposure in the allied fields of science and technology, “Don’t study for the sake of marks, Try to develop your personality,” he said.
R Vasanthakumar, Chairman and Managing Trustee of Karpagam Educational Institutions, Coimbatore, who presided over the function said that learning is an endless process and advised the students to travel widely and not be in a haste to start earning. “Don’t be a frog in the well; Go around the world. Sky is the limit,” he said.
In all, 419 students were given degrees. Among them were 211 Among them were 211 graduates, 207 post-graduates and one M.Phil students.
