Chennai: Tata Consultancy Services on Thursday launched its science-to software-training programme in the city. Tata Ignite’ is a seven-month programme that aims to transform 500 science (B.Sc. Physics and mathematics) graduates into global software professionals. Thereafter the trainees will be absorbed into any of the company’s services depending on their performance.
CEO and Managing Director S Ramadorai told media persons that young science graduates had been selected from 125 colleges across nine states and 25 cities after the rigorous four-stage selection process. This included test for core analytical and communication skills, teamwork and ability to learn and collaborate.
“Nearly 60 percent of the selected candidates are from non-metro cities and are typically first generation college graduates. More than 60 percent of the 500 strong batch comprises women. About 365 graduates hail from Tamil Nadu, 90 from the north-east with the remainder from across the country. About 5, 000 candidates had applied for the programme with TCS talking to 4, 000 of them. In the second batch starting from June 1, TCS will scale up the number to 2, 000 science graduates as part of the new initiative,” Ramadorai said.
Recruitment for the second batch has already started. These 2, 500 science graduates would be in addition to the 30, 000 being recruited by the company during the current fiscal.
Ramadorai said, “TCS Ignite is not only about personal transformation and professional growth but also about social change. TCS has taken a significant step in the IT industry to build professional aspirations of young graduates.” This he felt was necessary if the country was necessary if the country was to tap the knowledge capital of the country.
The company will be harnessing the services of instructors ranging from retired scientists, teachers and college professors as well as the faculty of three colleges in the country as part of an exchange programme with TCS. The trainees will undergo a continuous assessment with every employee required to answer 1, 000 questions after every four months in real time. These would be published besides which there would be weekly quizzes and professional assessment by mentors.
Vice president and head Ravi Viswanathan added, “This specialized learning programme will provide a platform for bright science graduates to prepare themselves for a long, successful career with TCS. It’s a great opportunity for participants to develop into competent and organized software professionals.”
