This followed the visit of the Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi to certain Government Arts Colleges to discuss with the teachers and students the proposal of the State Government to convert their colleges into unitary universities.
Government Arts College, Coimbatore, was among the five that had been included in the proposal.
The other colleges are Queen Mary’s College and Presidency College in Chennai, and the Government Arts College for Men and Government Arts College for Women (both into a single university), Kumbamkonam.
As many as 75 members from 69 colleges attended the meeting on Saturday. They decided on a series of agitations to protest the Government’s move.
“On September 5, we have planned to wear black badges to work. A fast will be observed on September 6 in the eight zonal centres of the TNGCTA. Processions will be taken out on October 11 and November 5.
“In the meantime, if the Bill gets passed in the Assembly, then we will go on an indefinite strike,” Mr. Tamilmani added.
