Chennai: At least 19 in situation of higher education in Tamil Nadu are offering unapproved technical courses either on their own or in collaboration with foreign universities.
These institutions, including a government organization have been luring thousands of students to enroll for various technical course, promising them the best placement offers, concealing the fact that courses are not approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The AICTE is a statutory body constituted by the Government of India to regulate technical education in the country.
On Sunday and Monday, the AICTE issued public notices across the country warning students not to enroll in courses that did not have the mandatory approval from it.
The list of unapproved institutions posted on the AICTE Website:http://www.aicte.ernet.in reveal the 169 institutions have been conduction courses in the field of technical education without obtaining approval fro the AICTE. Likewise, till date, 104 institutions have been offering technical education programmes in collaboration with foreign universities without the AICTE approval. A perusal of the list revealed that 19 of the institutions on the blacklist are form Tamil Nadu. Most of these are situated in Chennai and the Madurai based American College also figures in the list.
The Chennai-based institutions offering unapproved technical courses in collaboration with foreign universities include private names such as the Great Lake Institute of Management, the Stansfield School of Business and the Canan School of Catering and Hotel Management
The Institution offering unapproved technical courses on their own include the IITM Business School, the ICFAI (three centres) and Government of India’s small Industries Service Institute (SISI)

“Students are advised not to seek admission in technical education courses run by any institution that has not been approved by the AICTE
They are cautioned that joining unapproved programmes can have serious consequences in terms of eligibility for employment, higher studies, etc,” the AICTE Members Secretary warned in the public notice.
“Students desirous of joining any technical programme of any institution must confirm the status to approval fro the AICTE Website:http://www.aicte.ernet.in, the directory of approved institutions and programmes or the Information and Facilitation Centres at the AICTE Headquarters in New Delhi and its reginal offices located at Bangalore, Bhopal, Chennai, Chandigarh, Kanpur, Kolkata and Mumbai,” he added.
Great Lakes Clarifies:
The Great lakes Institute of Management, Channai, executive director S.Sriram has said the institute has not concealed the fact that its courses are not approved by the All India Council for Technical Education.
In response to the report “TN colleges in AICTE’s backlist’ that appeared in these columns on March 20, Sriram said “Our Website:http://www.glakes.org under FAQ specifically talks about recognition to the various programmes that we conduct and we have mentioned that we conduct we have mentioned that we do not have AICTE approval. This is a fact which we have never concealed from anybody in the past and we never intend” ENS.
