12,000 students stay off TNEA Counselling

Chennai: Thousands of BE/B.Tech government quota seats in self-financing engineering colleges may have no takers when the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA 2007) counselling ends this month.

As of Friday, when the Single Window Counselling entered its 27th day, at least 12,000 boys and girls who were issued call letters had failed to turn up at the Anna University in Chennai to participate in the selection process.

"Since July 22, we had issued call letters to approximately 47,000 eligible aspirants.Of them, only around 35,000 have attended the counselling, which is now into its second phase

While an absenteeism rate of 25 percent was recorded in the first and second phase of counselling, over the past two days, nearly 35 percent of the candidates who had been issued call letters have stayed away.

Around 84,000 boys and girls had applied for the TNEA counselling this year, while the number of seats available under the government quota is a little over 63,000.

Enquiries revealed that several students had already enrolled themselves in deemed universities and self-financing engineering colleges under the management quota. Since students 5 who are unable to find seats in their favoured courses in preferred colleges, they were opting for management quota seats, it was learnt.
